Lambing in Teesdale
Egglestone Abbey

The small village of Lartington lies three miles west of Barnard Castle in Teesdale, a North Pennine valley famous for its waterfalls and wild flowers.

Medieval monks knew a thing or two about keeping sheep! For 300 years the monks of Egglestone Abbey near Barnard Castle pastured sheep at the Crag, Lartington. The remains of earlier farming practices are abundant.

This tradition is continued today at Low Crag Farm though the aims of the enterprise have changed from the days when the monks kept sheep for their wool and their milk. Today meat is more important and our flock of 150 registered Mule ewes are crossed with Suffolk and Texel rams to provide high quality lambs.
