In 1993 the Low Crag Farm was accepted into the DEFRA Countryside Stewardship scheme which promotes the combination of good farming practice with environmental protection. Most of the 184 acres (74.5 Hectares ) at Low Crag Farm is managed under the DEFRA Countryside Stewardship Scheme which has resulted in the creation of woodlands, footpaths and the rebuilding of the traditional dry stone walls. A pond is to be created in 2002/3 Every effort is made to conserve and enhance wildlife : lapwing, curlew, snipe and skylark nest here and buzzards are regularly seen. A recent botanical survey listed over 100 species of trees, flowers and grasses. There is public access to most of the land, footpaths have been added, trees planted and dry-stone walls rebuilt. Visitors are always welcome. |
